Smaller, rural towns across Pennsylvania are seeing a boom in real estate business as people look to move to a less populated area or buy a second home in one in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With many businesses moving to more online-based work, many consumers do not expect to go into an office as frequently, so rural buyers are looking for homes with home-office spaces and good broadband to work remotely. And for many companies considering fully-online work schedules for the foreseeable future, many families living within city limits are considering moving to a more affordable, larger space outside their current living arrangement.

These factors have contributed to a building exodus of real estate consumers from large cities to a more rural lifestyle. The PA Association of Realtors has noted that customers living in Philadelphia, New York City, Washington DC, and other densely-populated areas are turning their sights to the spacious, hill-laden country-side of Central and Southern Pennsylvania.

Another key factor is shortness of inventory; like many of the neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, small towns in more rural areas are lacking sufficient housing for these potential home-buyers. With a small supply of homes on the market running out, the market is heating up as home-buyers rush to place offers on these rural homes as they hit the market.

If you’ve been considering making the move to a rural town in Pennsylvania, there’s no time like the present to begin to peruse your options. Grand, rolling hills, open pastures, and fresh air await you.
